About The Designers

Spotlight: Biika

Janet Mugume

Liz and Bunda – The Founder and Partners of Biika, proudly Ugandan makers of bags. Made in Uganda. Available in store.

What is your definition of bold?

Unafraid - The ability to do (or be) what one truly desires, regardless of whatever others may think or feel about it - people, institutions or authorities.

What would your superpower be?

Time travel. The ability to go backwards or forewords in time, to see different things at different times. To decipher mysteries of the past and to see the future, way before it happens.

Which words or phrases do you overuse?

“Eh eh?” - I have tried and failed to stop using this expression.

What is your star sign?

Libra (Liz) and Scorpio (Bunda).

What is your favorite word in your native language, and what does it mean?

BUZIMA – It’s a runyankole/rukiga word that can be directly translated to mean 'for real?'. Depending on the tone of the voice of the speaker, it can be used to express shock, amazement or even disappointment.

What is one of your guilty pleasures?

Bags, bags and more bags.

What are you looking forward to?

I look forward to the feeling of overwhelming contentment - like you can be and do anything that you want without the feeling of guilt or incompleteness in person or purpose.

Describe your brand in one word.

I find that there is no one singular word that can fully describe BIIKA. If I had to use a couple of words I would use remarkable dynamic, contemporary, bold, fun, customer oriented.

Tell us about your background, how & when did you decide to start your entrepreneurial journey?

One of us bought a white bag for a wedding oneweekend in December of 2015. The zipper snapped, so in a panic they looked for a way to fix the bag and ended up making a quick emergency clutch for the wedding (we still have it). So begun the BIIKA story.

Our first collection - THE GENESIS - consisted of 30 multicolored clutches in various shapes, colors and sizes. The bags were stored away for a while because we weren't sure about how they would be received by the public.

Finally, we approached the BOLD team that were happy to have our products in their store. This was the first store that carried our product and has been carrying it ever since.

How would you describe your overall style?

Contemporary African fashion.

What are you currently working on?

We are currently working on an eccentric line of bags that are adoptable to both formal and casual situations. It's a collaboration with ISA-BEAU a, Ugandan fashion designer.

How do you stay up-to-date with what is trending?

In addition to social media, we stay aware of the cultural climate of 'BanaKampala' (loosely translated to mean people who live in Kampala) who are arguably some of the most fashion-conscious people you will ever meet.

How do you keep your team motivated?

We are motivated by various things, but including never forgetting why we started this wonderful BIIKA journey and appreciating where we want to be in the future.

It's also hard to ignore the compliments that we receive from the clients that appreciate our products. It's a major motivator.
